Excellent place to stay

We stayed here so we could do the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. The service and the friendly staff were excellent. Good facilities, clean tidy rooms, worth the stay. If you like dogs they have a very friendly animal called: Brody. He’s a border collie, not your usual black and white one but a blond haired dog. You will tire out playing with him sooner than he will. Not very far from the towns centre, a good place to have a meal is the Clyde Hotel in the main street. If we do the other walk in the area next year, we’re still getting over doing the Alpine Crossing, we will definitely stay here again.

Cozy, friendly and a gorgeous getaway

We loved our stay at Tussock Grove. Our time here started off great, the host Chris was very accommodating, staying up late in order to check us in and advise us he had noted our dietary requirements that we had sent earlier.

Our room was spacious, clean and comfy. We had a large upstairs bedroom and a cozy downstairs lounge, perfect for relaxing. We had a cooked breakfast both mornings we were there, and both times the food was delicious and came out very quickly. We also enjoyed a lovely dinner here too, the food was restaurant quality and delicious.

Our host Chris was amazing! Very friendly, genuine and willing to help. We were originally staying there as part of their “Tongariro Crossing Package” but due to injuries, we were unable to do the crossing. Chris used his excellent local knowledge to provide us with another track we could use, and was happy to drop us off at this location.

Overall it was a great stay and we would love to come back and stay again. The hospitality at this place is amazing! I would recommend this place to anyone travelling to Ohakune, that’s wanting a truly unique and relaxing experience.

Great Place to Stop When Travelling South

This is a lovely stop over hotel, especially if travelling from Auckland southwards. It is unusual, Our room was a mezzanine room with s balcony double bed and sofa with downstairs a shower room and seating . Plenty of room. Fresh milk for your tea and coffee too, which you can put in your fridge. Spa – yes Spa pool!! Brilliantly relaxing after the driving and open till 10pm! Very comfortable hotel. Breakfast was very good and at very reasonable prices. The owner is very friendly and helpful in making sure you have everything you need and suggestions if places to visit locally! This is a great hotel with very friendly feel and one that I would highly recommend. Book early though as they can get quite busy.

Ideal place to stay when doing the tongariro crossing

We got a grabone for this place to do the tongoriro crossing. Great place where the owners were very accomodating to stay up late for us to arrive from Auckland on a Friday after work. They had everything organised and ready for us including meal packs. The place is getting a bit dated but overall still quite comfortable. Spa pool was OK, the jets werent working. Would recommend the place to stay..

Cosy value hotel

We had 4 nights here during ski season.
We were warmly greeted by Chris, the owner, who is friendly, knowledgable and helpful.
The rooms are cosy and comfortable and I think all loft configuration. Brody the dog is delightful.
The lounge and dining room are also comfortable and inviting.
Breakfast was good value perfectly proportioned.
My only hesitation in giving 5 stars is that the main road through town could wake light sleepers (like me, but I’m used to waking up all night).
I will have no hesitation in booking again when next in Ohakune.

Beats most of the hotel experiences we’ve ever had

We stayed here for a skiing trip for two nights in a Queen Mezzanine Room. Our room was fantastic with a warm shower, comfy bed and everything else we needed! Chris and his wife were extremely welcoming and really made us feel at home. We ate one dinner and two breakfast at the hotel and LOVED all of the meals. The food was delicious! All round a fantastic hotel that beats most of the hotel experiences we’ve ever had!

Cosy, friendly accommodation

I have stayed at Tussock Grove many times over the years & it is consistently great. The hosts are always friendly & accommodating. The atmosphere with the cosy open fire lounge, magazines in the corner & a wine from the bar makes it all very relaxing & personable. The last time I stayed I had a soak in the spa pool, great after driving miles for business. Thank you.

Your hospitality from Reception to Departure was superb!

Your hospitality from Reception to Departure was superb. I will have no hesitation in recommending Tussock Grove to my family and friends.

Exceeded our expectations!

Our stay was wonderful across all areas (room, staff, food etc) and exceeded our expectations. Better than most of the hotel experiences we have both ever had before too!

Cosy Cottage

We were very impressed with the facilities in our 2 bedroom cottage. It had everything needed to be self-sufficient including washing machine and dryer. There was plenty of space, even having a ‘spare’ room/library. There were two bathroom areas. It was cosy and warm. The outside covered in patio area with table and chairs looked very inviting for a warm day. We would love to stay there again sometime.

Lovely Get-Away

We enjoyed our two-night stay here and would go back again for sure. Chris was a lovely personable host. Super clean and cosy room (two levels). The spa was great after a day on the mountain! Enjoyed our cooked breakfast and very tasty pizza onsite too 🙂

Enjoyed It!

Great accommodation and lovely food as well. We stayed for 3 days, 2 nights and our main goal was to do the Tongariro crossing. It was too windy to do it on the day that we were supposed to. There’s an alternate trek to do but it turned out that we can do the Tongariro the next day. Was double tiring because we had to drive home after we finished the trek but was all worth it. Thanks to Chris for the pleasant stay!

Very Enjoyable Stay

We booked with the intention of walking the Tongariro Crossing, which sadly didn’t eventuate because of the weather. No matter, Chris was an excellent host and we had a great stay! Our room was perfect; well kitted out and the bed very comfortable. Had dinner with the other guests which was a nice touch. Will happily stay again.

Great Hospitality

This hotel offers an excellent package for the Tongariro Crossing. Everything is well organised and clearly outlined to you when checking in. From there on it was plain sailing. The meals and lunch provided were very good. Chris and Christine were extremely hospitable. We appreciated the special touches, especially the spa and a selection of up to date magazines.

Cosy Winter Stay

I loved this cute little place! I stayed here for three nights with a partner to go skiing (I’m from Australia). It was good value and very cosy! The couple that run the place were lovely and very accommodating. They had a really beautiful dog too. Its almost like being at home. There is a nice common area with a fireplace where you can relax and chill out with the dog. They have a bookshelf full of DVDs for you to borrow, every night we stayed we watched some great movies (inc. Gone Girl, 10/10).
The first night we were there we went out for dinner but we should have stayed in! The second night we had pizza in the restaurant and it was the best pizza ever! Apparently they make their own pizza base sauce and it is to die for. The third night we decided to get the pizza again because it was just so damn delicious. The owner even offered to bring it to our room so we laid in bed and watched a movie and he brought it to our room and even delivered it to our bed haha.
There was a spa which was divine after a long cold day of skiing. Both times we went no one else was in there which was nice.
Overall, a great stay!
